Kurdish cultural magazines |
Kurdish cultural magazines Kurdish cultural magazines have been the mainstay of language and literature in the Kurdish context. The first Kurdish newspaper Kurdistan was founded on April 22, 1898 by Miqdad Midhad Bedirkhan in Kairo, Egypt. He wrote numerous times, in vain, to the Sultan of Istanbul to get the permission to publish his newspaper in Istanbul. The newspaper later moved to Switzerland, where 14 issues (Nos. 6-19) were published. Egypt once again became the seat for issues No. 20-23 of the newspaper. Issue No. 24 was printed in London, England. The editorial offices later moved to Folkestone, then once again to Switzerland, where the last two issues (Nos. 30-31, 14 March 1902) of the newspaper were published. Kurdistan, as the first newspaper, is a trailblazer for those to follow. Kurdish newspapers and magazines often flourish in exile, in difficult political, as well as economical, conditions. An index of the Kurdish magazines, both in the Kurdish language and other languages available at the library, can illustrate this. To select the cultural magazines has been difficult, not least depending on the definition of culture. Here you will find magazines which are relatively independent politically. We limit ourselves to the magazines which are sent regularly to the Kurdish Library. We include a multitude of dialects (kurmancî, soranî and dimilî or zaza), publishing language (Kurdish, Turkish, German etc.) and seat of publication. This list is also meant as a service to the publications, to enable direct orders and distribution. We will be of service concerning questions, other than ordering and distribution, about the cultural magazines. |
